Invited lecture title:Expectations and Boundaries of Applying Machine Learning in Geotechnical Engineering

Dr. Mona Badr El-Din Anwar is a Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at the German University in Cairo (GUC) and the Vice Director for Academic Affairs.

Prof. Anwar has over 25 years of rich experience in academia and geotechnical consultancy. Her career is marked by significant contributions to various geotechnical projects and a solid dedication to teaching, supervising, and research. Dr. Anwar is the Chairperson of the Professional Image Committee in the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). She is also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE) and board member in the Egyptian Geotechnical Society (EGS) demonstrating her profound engagement and influence in the field of geotechnical engineering.

The lecture aims to explore the expanding role of Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in geotechnical engineering, dissecting their potential to revolutionize the field while critically addressing their limitations. The talk will cover various facets of ML and AI applications, from soil behavior prediction and risk assessment to complex underground construction challenges. The lecture will give a balanced perspective on integrating Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence within geotechnical engineering.
